Welcome to StudioDoor China, the online entryway to the studios and exhibition spaces of mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
Spending time in an artist's studio offers collectors an experience different from purchasing artwork through a gallery in New York or London or Kuala Lumpur. It allows collector and artist to know one another and collector to understand the influences, process, and character behind the work he or she might be considering. It makes time for stories over a pot of tea--the history of China, the history of the artist, the history of the artwork, all intertwined and explored--the beginning of a lifelong conversation between collector and artwork.
Sitting in artists' studios, I've discovered unpublished snapshots of seminal moments in modern Chinese life, read original diary entries from the early struggles of today's most significant artists, marveled at rare sketches from the traditional training of the now avant-garde. I've pored through artifacts and loose tea in the bottom drawers of overstuffed dressers and discovered new and invigorating interpretations of work I thought I knew. And I've done it in the company of critics, curators, and artists themselves.
It is that experience StudioDoor sets out to offer, opening a line to the artist's studio, packing up the stories and images and essays and videos for you to unwrap at your own pace, when you have a quiet moment to spend in the studio of an artist half a world away.
I'm immensely grateful to be a part of your journey.
